Consultation process on smokeless tobacco products launched.
On 13 July 2007 the European Commission and the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) launched a consultation process on a scientific opinion on smokeless tobacco products (STP). The consultation is due to run until 28 September 2007. The SCENIHR has adopted a preliminary report on the health effects of smokeless tobacco products (STP) to provide the European Commission with a sound scientific basis for developing and implementing policies on smokeless tobacco. The report addresses health effects and addiction potential related to the use of STP and examines their role in smoking initiation and cessation. Furthermore, the possibility to extrapolate the experience and use patterns from countries permitting the marketing of oral tobacco to other EU-countries where it is currently not available was assessed. Interested parties are invited to send their comments on the preliminary opinion.
